Halloween is time of fun, but it can also be a time homeowners should be paying attention to their home security. Many burglars take advantage of the holiday, and it’s important for homeowners to be aware and alert.

Here are some home security tips specifically for Halloween:

  1. Confirm that your motion sensor lights are working properly. This is a great way to keep trick or treaters safe, and keep potential burglars away.
  2. Check with your neighborhood or community and see if there is a set a time to end the trick or treating. Often, communities will set a deadline for legitimate trick or treating, so be aware if people are out and about after this time. It could be harmless but it may also be a reason for suspicion. If your neighborhood participates in a curfew for trick or treating, is recommended that homeowners stop answering doors after a set time.
  3. If you have a garage, consider parking cars inside to deter vandalism.
  4. For homeowners with an alarm system from a trusted alarm company, it’s important to arm it. During this time homeowners are often distracted and forget to set their alarms. Also, be sure to set your alarm if you are out trick or treating with your kids.
  5. Always lock your door after every time a trick or treater visits your house. Don’t keep your door unlock thinking you’ll just have to unlock it for the next set of kids. It’s best to lock it again, immediately after each child. It only takes a second and the safety is worth it. If your kids will be answering the door, remind them to do the same.
  6. Map out a trick or treating route ahead of time, and warn children how important it is to stay on this route.
